Latent subtypes of depressive symptoms in Korean older adults
Park Hyun-Yong

Abstract
The purpose of the present study is to (a) identify the underlying subgroups of Korean older adults who had similar patterns of depressive symptoms, (b) explore the gender differences in subtypes of depressive symptoms, and (c) examine the relationship between the identified underlying subtypes of depressive symptoms and socio-demographic and clinical characteristics. Using the 2010 Korean Welfare Panel Study, a total of 4,823 older adults aged 65 and over were included in the analysis. Latent Class Analysis(LCA) was performed to examine the subtypes of depressive symptoms. Results indicate five distinct subtypes of depressive symptoms: (1) no depressive symptoms (42.2%), (2) somatic symptoms only (20.3%), (3) depressive affect and somatic symptoms (14.1%), (4) most depressive symptoms without interpersonal symptoms (17.3%), and (5) severe depressive symptoms (6.1%). In addition, a multigroup-LCA showed that measurement invariance holds across gender. However, the prevalence of latent classes was significantly different across gender, indicating female older adults are less likely to belong to the group without depressive symptoms. Furthermore, socio-demographic and clinical characteristics (e.g., levels of self-esteem, a satisfaction of social relations and leisure activities) were associated with identified subtypes of depressive symptoms among older adults. Findings highlight the heterogeneity of depressive symptoms among Korean older adults. Findings, also, indicate the need for tailored interventions for older adults by gender. Implications for social work practice were discussed.
